Placements & paid work

A Luminary placement is a real job: real customers, real deadlines, a wage and a reference at the end of it. It is the step between training and the open job market, and we build it around her.

How a placement works

Luminary Bakery

1. Referred

Women come to us through our sister charity, Luminary Women, once they are part way through its two-year training and support programme and ready to think about paid work.

2. Work experience

Short work-experience days in the bakery or café. She sees what the work is really like, and we see where she will thrive.

3. Paid placement

A part-time paid placement, usually six months, in production or front of house. Hours fit around childcare and life. She works alongside a supervisor and builds a track record. We hope soon to offer an accredited qualification alongside the placement.

4. Paid role or next step

Some placements become permanent roles with us; many of our team came through the programme. Others move on to jobs elsewhere with a reference, a CV that holds up and the confidence to use it.

Why it works

Most employment schemes stop at training. A placement at Luminary Bakery is employment: she is paid, she is part of the team, and the cakes she makes are sold to customers that day.

That is what builds a CV, a reference and the confidence to walk into the next interview. The cost of hosting a placement is covered by what we sell and by the people who support us.
