Luminary is an innovative response to a need we saw for women who have had a social and economic disadvantage. We are a social enterprise designed to offer opportunities for women to build a future for themselves. We provide a safe and professional environment where women can grow holistically – encouraging ambition, restoration and second chances. We use baking as a tool to take women on a journey to employability and entrepreneurship, equipping them with transferable skills for the working world. We offer courses, work experience and paid employment within our bakery, empowering women to build their career.

By investing in and releasing them to realise their dreams - through training, employment and community - we aim to break cycles of poverty, violence & disadvantage once and for all.

Luminary Limited is a registered charity (no. 1181835) and Luminary Bakery Limited is a registered limited company (no. 11450761) . So how do these two entities work together?

In order to maximise our impact we have built a new structure of charity and business which are interlinked in several ways, you can read more about this by clicking on the headings below!

Social Enterprise Model

Luminary Limited

As a charity, Luminary Limited provide our Employability Support Programme, 1-to-1 holistic support, Mentor Scheme & next steps Progression Support Programme.

An Impact Evaluation Project enabled Luminary to examine our outcomes against our aims and to analyse our efficiency at reaching the goal of empowering some of the UK's most disadvantaged women to thrive.

This project enabled Luminary to map out our "Theory of Change" model, and allowed us to redefine referral criteria to ensure we really are supporting our women. It also helped to hone what our measures of success are, and what our programme delivery looks like to support women to reach employment and independence. We identified that there are 5 key factors a woman needs support with in order to become independent. Going forward, we are targeting our support around those areas.

You can read more about this model in our 2019 Impact Report.

Luminary Bakery Limited

A key element of our "Theory of Change" model is that we run a successful business, Luminary Bakery Limited, which provides employment opportunities. Historically, one third of our Luminary Bakery Limited workforce have been graduates from our programmes.

Luminary Bakery Limited runs all commercial elements within Luminary, including the bakeries (wholesale & retail). As well as providing job opportunities, in the future it is our aim that it will also provide income for the charity.

"Meeting women experiencing extreme poverty, disadvantage, and violence was the inspiration for starting Luminary. Too often, violence and trauma isolate us from the community, when that is the very thing we need the most. Every woman has shown immense courage to survive her circumstances alone, but it is only when others embrace her that she can really start to fulfil her potential. Luminary is more than a bakery; it is a community and a sign of hope for so many."

- Alice Williams, Founder & CEO

This is why I have chosen to work with Luminary Bakery.
