Progression Support Programme

Our Progression Support Programme provides ongoing support to women as they continue on their journey towards independence. Following her graduation from our training programme, our Progression Team help women in their next chapter of the journey for the following 18 months. Our Progression Support Team work holistically with our graduates to source work experience, apply for jobs and continue to offer in depth support to address the challenges women face: past trauma, abuse, poor housing, physical health, government assistance, childcare, etc.

Additionally, the Progression Support Team oversees our Mentors Scheme, which links our grads with a professional woman to walk alongside her professionally and personally for a season.

LUMINARY APPRENTICESHIPS

The Luminary business runs a number of paid apprenticeships and internships exclusively for graduates of our training programmes. This is to give women further opportunities to build upon what they have learned in the course, and put this into practice in a commercial environment. These positions are available both in our bakery production and cafe front of house, and are designed carefully to give her opportunities to progress and track her development.

Often, it is her first experience of the world of work, so along with a supportive Line Manager, she is assigned a 'Luminary Sister' to buddy up with her and help her process any challenges she might be facing. These positions are fixed term contracts, to ensure she has the chance to progress beyond apprentice position, and to free up this learning opportunity to another Luminary graduate.

Previous Apprentice Leila* has since gone on to gain employment with another local bakery, she had this to say about her time with Luminary:

"Before Luminary I was shunned by most of my family and friends (bar one). I also had nowhere to live. This was an unbelievably painful time that no one will understand unless they've lived it. Naturally, feeling like a worthless burden to everyone, I never thought I'd be any use to any person. To go from that, to actually making baked edibles that people spend money on, is unbelievable. I got some of my pride back but it will take years to heal completely.

I still don't understand why a place like Luminary exists, somewhere that wants to help you get back in the swing of life, and wants nothing in return? .. never!"

Would you like to add a donation to your purchase? If so this will help cover the costs of our apprentice placements - enabling a woman’s first experience of the world of work.

MENTORSHIP

Luminary mentors are women from a variety of backgrounds, all of whom are willing to share their professional expertise and life lessons with our graduates. Some mentors have experience in the finance or business world, others in hospitality. Some have also experienced disadvantage in their lives and want to be able to help Luminary women as peers who may be one step ahead in the journey.

At Luminary we have a strong belief in an ethos of 'women supporting women'. By listening and asking good questions, mentors can play a crucial role in lifting our women up and helping them on their journey to independence.
